ORANGE PARK, Fla.—Virginia Calkins expects one thing when she goes to the hospital: “good care.” She was very surprised to find out Orange Park Medical Center had a problem with bed bugs recently.
The hospital says they’ve gotten rid of the bugs and have a plan in place to regularly screen for them. But this pest problem is something that’s become an issue across the country in the last year.
“We’re seeing and hearing more about bed bugs,” says George Richardson, from Peninsular Pest Control.
He says the tiny bugs have been spreading to the south from northern states, including Detroit and New York City.
“Bed bugs hitch hike into the house,” says Richardson.
The bugs are often transferred from your luggage to your home. Bed bugs are easy to spot. They leave light, brownish colored marks on the sheets and are usually around the mattress. The bugs are often flat and brown, unless they’ve feasted on blood.
To prevent spreading bed bugs, Richardson suggests buying a mattress cover. He says you should also launder all items from any trips. If the bugs don’t go away, you’ll have to call a pest control company.
