LAWN NUTRIENTS

This application will be a granular fertilization for our full service lawn programs. We will be using a 16-2-8 custom-blended fertilizer that includes the insecticide Bifenthrin. This treatment will provide your lawn with the nutrients needed for fall and winter as well as control of sod webworms, armyworms, chinch bugs, and mole crickets. PLEASE WATER IN THIS APPLICATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

   BROADLEAF WEEDS

Due to the potential damage to turf if herbicides are used at temperatures over 90 degrees; we are not able to treat broadleaf weeds during the summer months. This period does give weeds a chance to reestablish. Beginning in mid-to-late September when the temperatures moderate we will treat broadleaf weeds as needed and follow up on all fall applications.

In addition to broadleaf weed, the grassy weeds and sedges thrive during the summer. Any area with heavy sedge may be getting to much water if your sprinkler system is turned on or if the soil in the area is compacted. Compacted areas may need to be core aerated. We will begin our lawn aeration and lime applications starting in November – December.

LAWN CATERPILLARS

Sod webworms and armyworms are the larval stages of moths, which are prevalent in the late summer and early fall. These moths with a wingspan of ¾ to 1½ inches lay their eggs in the lawn. The newly hatched worms or larva chew the grass blades, leaving ragged yellowish brown spots in the lawn that appears like it has been hit by a weed whacker. There are no effective control measures for the adult moths but the worms can be successfully treated with insecticide.

We will be treating for these lawn caterpillars on all of our fall applications. However, if you notice damage occurring between regular services please call and we will inspect and retreat if needed

ONCE A YEAR FIRE ANT TREATMENT

Fire ants have earned a reputation as a stubborn and vicious pest. Fire ants are aggressive, reddish brown to black ants that construct nests, which are often visible as dome shaped mounds. Each mound may contain more than 200,000 ants.

If disturbed, they will attack in mass, each insect stinging repeatedly and injecting venom every time. These painful, burning stings result in a pustule and intense itching, which may persist for 10 days. Some people have allergic reactions to fire ant stings that range from rashes and swelling to paralysis, or anaphylactic shock. In rare instances, severe allergic reactions can cause death.

Since arriving in Alabama in the 1930’s the aggressive imported fire ants have spread to infest over 260 million acres in 13 southern states as well as California, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico. They are the number one insect problem for home lawns, schools, parks, and commercial lawns. On golf courses, they are second only to mole crickets. Controlling fire ants has been challenging. Baits and contact insecticides have been the only available treatments.

Peninsular Pest Control is now offering a new fire ant treatment program utilizing Chipco TopChoiceTM, which contains the active ingredient Fipronil. Fipronil has been used worldwide since 1995, and more recently become the standard material for control of mole crickets on golf courses. It has now been formulated for fire ant control.

Our treatment program includes the application of TopChoiceTM granules to the entire lawn and shrub bed areas. The fipronil contained in the granules is very effective because of its unique mode of action. Fipronil is active in insects by both contact and ingestion. Because the ants that come in contact are not immediately killed they help to spread the material to other ants. Fire ant activity will decrease dramatically over a 4-6 week period and TopChoiceTM   will continue to work for one year

It is very important to water in this application. Fire ant activity increases when the soil is moist and also when temperatures are moderate. Now is the perfect time of year to make this application.

In addition to the granular TopChoiceTM application, we will apply Chipco CeaseFireTM fire ant bait to any active fire ant mounds in your lawn. This bait will be taken in by the foraging ants and will help control the fire ants quicker by introducing the Fipronil directly to the mound.
